(2009). Kerala State Aids Control Society as well as Governing Body of Kerala State

of the dedicated services of Dr. N.Vijayakumar in the field of Blood Banking and

OTHER ACTIVITIES

Took charge of a non functioning Blood Bank at T.H.O.Hospital, Aluva in 1994 and
was instrumental in arranging the statutory requirements for a licensed Blood Bank
that works for 24 hours. Dr. Vijayakumar is singularly responsible for the conversion
of what was once 5hours a day, 5days a week bleeding facility to the present state
of the art facility. He prepares an excellent blue print of his project and logistics
and sells it down the line to meet the objective. He always brings a fresh perspective
to the table of discussion. He is a go getter and very aggressive in his thoughts
and one who keeps his team always motivated and tied up. The blood bank has so far
conducted more than three hundred blood donation camps in the periphery all proceeded
by awareness classes and pamphlet distribution on blood donation and HIV/AIDS prevention.
This Blood Bank has been recognized as the best one in the government sector and
has received awards of honour from the KSACS for its contribution in the field of
blood and organ donor motivation as also creating awareness regarding HIV/AIDS.
Dr.Vijayakumar is the driving force behind the Aswasalyam Aids Foundation Rehabilitation
Home offering in house care to destitute Aids patients at Aluva. Blood Bank, THQ
Hospital, Aluva is the first unit in Kerala State Health Service to obtain license
for Blood Components Separation. This is also the first Blood Bank in the State
to be recognized as Regional Blood Transfusion Centre. The Government of Kerala
has recognized the Unit as Training Centre for Blood Bank Medical Officers and Technicians.

Dr. Vijaya Kumar is the Secretary of the Ernakulam District Blood Transfusion Council
and had been a member of the Governing Body of the Kerala State Blood Transfusion
Council which has placed on record its deep appreciation of his contributions in
the field. A designated Transfusion Medicine Expert (NBTC, SBTC, KSACS & NACO) and
a State Resource Person for the Training of Blood Bank Technicians & Medical Officers.
Dr.Vijaya Kumar is also in the Quality Assurance Committee of the State Blood Transfusion
Council as well as the Core Committee constituted by NACO to monitor the functioning
of blood banks in the state. He is also in the panel of Assessors/Principal Assessors
of National Accreditation Board for Hospitals & Health Care Providers.
He was also a Member of the Expert Committee on Health & Education, Kerala State
Planning Board, and Special Task Force on M.G. P. Programme with A.D.B. assistance
and Member of the Expert Committee on Administrative Reforms, Directorate of Health
& Family Welfare. Has published several articles related to blood donation and blood
banking in I.M.A. publications.
He is also a member of the Child Welfare Committee of Ernakulam (constituted under
the J.J.Act) from 2008 onwards which has complimented his invaluable contributions
in ensuring care and protection of children in need.
Has been working as Resident Medical Officer, T.H.Q. Hospital, Aluva from 1995 and
has collected public contributions worth more than 72 lacs worth of equipments,
civil works and other amenities mobilizing help from N.G.Os and industrial establishments.
From December 2003 to 31.10.2005, he worked as the Medical Superintendent of the
hospital. Dr. Vijayakumar is a good team leader, always surrounded with lot of positive
energy which he passes to his team and charge them up. He never let team to defocus
from the organizational objectives. His subject knowledge and the way he use to
build strategies and adopt them to local level was excellent. Post retirement he
has been reemployed as the Medical Officer in Charge of the Regional Blood Transfusion
Centre, Government Hospital, Aluva and continues his close association with Hospital
development. The Hon’ble Minister for Transport Mr. Jose Thettayil presented to
him the Kerala Action Force Award for excellence in medico-social relief and blood
donation on 13.12.2009. Hon’ble Minister for Health & Family Welfare Smt. P.K.Sreemathy
Teacher presented to him Award of Honour in recognition his services for THQ Hospital
Aluva and Regional Blood Transfusion Centre for over a decade and half (1994-2010)
on 5.1.2010.
His latest success is the establishment (from concept to conclusion) of a Regional
Dialysis Centre at T.H.Q. Hospital, Aluva with twelve dialysis units to offer free
dialysis to the poor patients. He has managed twenty five lakhs contribution from
MPLADS of Mr.P.Rajeev, Member of Rajya Sabha for construction of the building and
sponsorship for twelve dialysis units with comfy couches and 4 hrs UPS back up,
1000L R.O.Plant, an ambulance to provide free transport, 82.5KVA generator backup
apart from many other amenities including sponsorship of consumables needed for
dialysis. His contributions were acknowledged by the Hon’ble Minister for Health
& Family Welfare at the inaugural ceremony on 29.1.2011. He is an officer with a
unique blend of strategic thinking, planning and executing it till the final. His
achievements and attainments in this as in other arenas bear testimony to his absolute
dedication and commitment as well as sheer hard work. The Indian Medical Association
honoured him at the National Conference in Jaipur with IMA SPECIAL AWARD FOR EMINENT
MEDICL MEN FOR DISTINGUISHED ACHIEVEMENT OF THE HIGHEST ORDER for the year 2010.
On 14.07.2011 (World Blood Donors’ Day) and 1.10. 2011 (National Blood Donation
day) the Blood Bank under his stewardship got the State Government’s Award for the
best performance (third time). The Overseas Malayalee Association conferred on him
the Award of Honour for his successful initiative in introducing Community Dialysis
Centre concept in Kerala on 10.2.2012 at Dubai. The Aluva Municipal Council in an
unique gesture honoured him at the valedictory function of Mahasivarathri – Drisyotsavam
Celebrations on 2.3.2012 at Sivarathri manalpuram for his contributions in the field
of public health in Aluva taluk from 1994-2012
A past Vice President of the Indian Academy of Paediatrics, Kerala State Chapter
Dr.Vijaya Kumar was President of the Indian Society of Blood Transfusion & Immunohaematology
Kerala Chapter (2006-2009) and currently member of the Executive of Indian Medical
association, Indian Society of Blood Transfusion & Immunohaematology and Indian
Academy of Paediatrics. He has excelled in many fields – Paediatrics, Nutrition,
and Transfusion Medicine and of late care of End Stage Renal Disease patients. He
has attended many state and national conferences (as delegate, faculty and chair
person) of Indian Medical Association, Indian Academy of Paediatrics as well as
Indian Society of Blood Transfusion & Immunohaematology.
